WOULD ONE ABANDON CREATIVITY AS FRIENDS PERTAINING TO THE FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC ART, FROM “NOVEMBERS” VISUAL INSTRUCTIONS?
It was a day in late November. I remember it well.
I had risen early to begin the venture I had selected on a previous day. Travelling to an unfamiliar area without preconceived thoughts was most refreshing, and suggested by itself, a new momentum of fulfillment similar to that of children anxiously collecting gifts placed under Christmas trees. The typical overcast skies of the month predominated the area where I rested initially, and the shadow of subdued foreboding was not at all present. The long, drawn out stillness of silence, greeted me with a mandatory confrontation of a traveller being subjected to an area almost in frequented before. Studying the landscape before me presented limitless opportunities for those who willingly invest the time to observe. Making determinations as where to begin creating imagery became obvious when I negotiated my thinking of the subject matter surrounding me, and at that point I began an alternate discovery of seeing. The silence became stronger and it’s voice stimulated senses of isolation further motivating me to separate myself from the reality of the remaining life before me, to the physical presence of decay. One cannot help not feeling a connection mentally to the co-existence of the before and after life cycle, and, how I chose to dictate this message accurately to my camera is by developing a spiritual respect for it’s entirety.
The hands on the clock now indicated an awkwardness in measurement referencing that I was lost in thought for 120 minutes without creating a single frame. Landscapes become companions with familiarity’s comparable to that of old friends and their “personalities” and are at times, often similar to their associates perhaps situated on other unknown shores.
Withdrawing my camera from it’s bag and affixing it onto my tripod was an exhilarating feeling knowing that I was now, no longer an awkward stranger to these parts. A relationship had been established if even in a temporary existence and I felt captivated at the affiliation of being entertained by the suggested conversations of many new friends. Lens selection was the next item to carefully consider and after a brief pursuit of decisive thought, I made my decision and began visually connecting further with my newest of partnerships.
November for many is a trying time for image creation however, one must not overlook the fact that the landscape itself is speaking directly to you, with such levels of clarity regarding elements of design. The bright autumn colours,
“at times distracting photographically”, have now departed for yet another year revealing a new sense of design. Photographer’s and painters have for years felt attachment to the vibrancy of natures pallet bursting with colour orchestrated with the compliments of Jack Frosts involvement. Now, the forest stands before me unclothed in appearance and the truest sense of shape, line and texture, create formations of design that would otherwise not be available to me. The trees themselves stand strongly vertical, characteristic of soldiers at attention, representing a new sense of strength and rigidity they did not bear being fully clothed. Lines of landscapes, hills and various terrains speak a new language of travel when one journeys with their indicated motion directing me here and there. Selection of image matter has never been greater than at this point in the year aside from early spring, when one discovers a similarity in natures garments. Continuing composing imagery on the ground glass of my camera indicated that various focal lengths affecting vision be implemented reflecting additional meaning of representation regarding that which lay before me. The light was now “awakening gently” over the valley and earths eyes smiled softly creating specularities which were subtle, but ever present.
“The softness and gradation of Novembers tonalities quiet to the eye”, invoke a solitude of spirit and peace within oneself. Competitive visual colours while captivating in themselves, sadly, could never quiet the souls of accelerated individuals regarding mature patterns of thought in the sensitivity of artistic design. One need not be in a state of quick departure from a general area when creating imagery since much can be discovered within the proximity where one resides. Study your subject matter carefully by not permitting distractions to derail your mental involvement regarding visual acutance.
My ever moving time piece now spoke six hours had elapsed, and perhaps suggested the desire to explore other areas creating equal or challenging visual momentums. When you are creating imagery, consider the above suggestions and implement them into your photography on a regular basis if at all possible. Your photographic statement will advance exponentially the more disciplined you become and alternately, greater possibilities will lay before you advancing your status as a photographic artist.
I recall once leaving the city some time ago by myself on a much welcome vacation. With my photography equipment nicely packed, I visited many territories of unknown acquaintance; visual relationships were established as before, invested in, solidified, and then the temporary ties of life were realistically severed as the “clock in my head told me it was time to return to the place from where my journey began”.
I have been questioned often regarding travelling alone, but there can be such discoveries made when you walk with just oneself and aside from that…..
“IF YOUR LOVED ONES ARE ALWAYS WITH YOU, YOU HAVE NO ONE TO COME HOME TO”.
With Good Wishes……Jeff Ryan.
